Weight Lifting Exercise Equipment - Dumbbell

When deciding to invest in weight lifting equipment, you may be overwhelmed by the selection. While dumbbells, a bench, barbells, and a stability ball provide a total workout with limited equipment, the brand or specific pieces you purchase will depend on your personal needs. How can you identify the best weight training equipment you can get?

Before purchasing equipment, consider the expected frequency it will be used, your goals and budget, storage space limitations, and who will use the equipment. Interestingly enough, some of the least expensive equipment is the most multi-functional and easiest to store.

Free weights offer the most versatility for the money. Multiple exercises and can be performed with dumbbells. If only one person is using the dumbbells and expects to need only a few weight sizes, it may be acceptable to start out with a limited number of sets in different weights. If several people with different builds, genders, and experience levels are using the dumbbells, more sizes may be needed or purchasing adjustable dumbbells may be preferable. Adjustable dumbbells are advantageous because they are convenient to store. However, they are more expensive than standard dumbbells and using them requires adjusting the weights between each set. Barbells can also be adjusted and used for numerous exercises.

Benches, another gym essential, vary in size and price, but an adjustable one will maximize the ability to perform a wider variety of exercises. When purchasing a bench, try to make sure it feels sturdy and the padding is comfortable. If the bench is adjustable, you should be able to adjust it easily and feel secure when it is locked into place. If you have limited space, consider a bench that is easy to move or foldable. In short, your size, your space limitations, the durability and comfort of the bench, and your budget will guide your purchase.

Another versatile piece of equipment is a stability ball. Weight training can be done while lying or sitting on a stability ball. Incorporating a stability ball into your weight workout will help hone your balance and strengthen your core. Thicker balls are less likely to puncture and will feel more secure to use while lifting.

While there are many other pieces of equipment which can help you customize your workout, dumbbells, barbells, a bench, and a stability ball are key to providing a total body workout. Your budget, physical size, storage space, and expected use of the equipment will help you find the precise equipment that best meets your needs.
